Treatment

as someone who's been in the mental health system for over 5 years I have pretty good insight into the different options available.

in honesty the most common two forms of treatment for mental illness are Therapy and Medication.

My primary form of treatment is medication, i find it to be more effective than therapy and helps me deal with things a lot better.

the video you see linked is the most recent update about my own medication situation (I talk about being prescribed Diazepam) its basically a life update

Medication

obviously I cannot write about every medication out there but I can talk a little bit about the different kinds, and I can share with you some of the main medications prescribed

TYPES OF MEDICATION

  • Antipsychotics

  • AntiDepressants

  • AntiAnxiety

  • Benzo's

  • mood stabilisers

  • Z tabs (non benzo sleeping tablets)

  • epilepsy medication

  • herbal

  • over the counter

as you can see there are a lot of different types of medications you can be prescribed, they are all used in different ways to treat different conditions. some of what you see may surprise you but let me assure you I'll explain further on this page.

medication is something people are often scared, judgemental or just don't understand the use of psychiatric medication, whether that be due to ignorance or lack of understanding, medication is often life saving for a lot of psychiatric patients and I know it has been for me, there are also a lot of people who have had bad experiences with medication which would be as expected as with any type of medication.

in my own opinion medication has been one of the most beneficial things with regards to my own mental health recovery, I would not be where I am without medication, that isn't to say that I haven't had bad experiences with medication because I have. the next part of this is going to go into details of each type of medication as seen listed and some examples of the types of medications under each of the segments.

Antipsychotic medication

so what is antipsychotic medication?

Antipsychotics are a group of drugs that are used to treat serious mental health conditions such as psychosis as well as other emotional and mental conditions. In addition, they are prescribed for the treatment of intractable hiccoughs and pain that can result from restlessness during palliative care.

Psychosis is a condition in which a patient loses contact with reality. The condition often includes hallucinations or delusions. When experiencing hallucinations, the patient often hears voices that aren’t actually there, while delusions related to psychosis consist of feelings or ideas that aren’t based on reality.

Antipsychotics help to control the symptoms of psychosis as well as less serious mental health conditions such as bipolar and mood disorder that may develop into later psychosis. Antipsychotics reduce or increase the effect of neurotransmitters in the brain to regulate levels. Neurotransmitters help transfer information throughout the brain. The neurotransmitters affected include dopamine, noradrenaline, and serotonin. Dopamine is the primary neurotransmitter affected by taking antipsychotics; an overactive dopamine system may be one cause of the hallucinations and delusions commonly experienced during psychosis.

There are a variety of antipsychotic drugs in common use including:

  • Amisulpride

  • Aripiprazole

  • Clozapine

  • Olanzapine

  • Paliperidone

  • Quetiapine

  • Risperidone

There are so many different types of medication, this is not the only kind, they are effective but not for everybody.
